What is Restorative Yoga?

Yoga is often described as a “yoking” or “union” of things. Sometimes that can mean the coming together of opposites (up / down, left / right, active / passive), because when we can learn to hold space for both, we find a middle path and can come to a place of wholeness.

Restorative Yoga can then be described as remembering how to relax, and then integrating some activity into the practice. In other words, learning to relax while being supported (by props, the teacher, the space) in traditional yoga postures… learning to meditate, while engaging in gentle breathing practices (meditation on the breath)… Restorative yoga can also be used to restore us to a place of calm, balance, intuition and remembrance.

If Dharma Yoga to me represents the INHALE - the creative practice, the one that inspires me to do more, be more… then this Restorative Yoga practice can be seen as the EXHALE - the practice that holds space and stretches time… the practice you do when you feel you cannot get on the mat.

My approach to Restorative Yoga is based on Cyndi Lee´s teachings, focusing on thoughtful arrangement, nurturing and supportive alignment (using props), mindfulness and compassion.
